Why have indoor Golf lessons? I get asked this a lot. “I want to hit balls outside and see the ball flight”. The answer is that in order to make real lasting progress we need to look at the fundamentals of the swing and measure the efficiency and ability

of the swing to repeat. We do this by recording the swings and comparing them to each other together with measuring the ball speed and spin in a way that would be impossible to do with the naked eye.
Once this has been done a plan is drawn up as to how much of the swing needs to be changed, in what order and over what period of time. This plan is agreed by the student and coach and we then start to target the areas that need changing. We can video the lessons and compare to measure improvement but it is important to note that we would not necessary expect to see an improvement in ball flight straight away.
As the swing starts to change the student is given drills to work on in order to change the old bad habits and ingrain the new correct movements. These drills do not include the ball as the purpose is to concentrate on the body movement and swing not the ball flight. When the swing has improved to a point that we are working on the impact position we would then start to take a close look at the ball flight including ball speed, launch angle, side spin, dispersion of ball to target and distance the ball travels.

So the main points are
1. Create a plan
2. Concentrate on the cause of the problem (the swing) and not the effect (the ball).
3. Measure improvement of firstly the swing and then the ball by scientific methods not by guess work or the human eye.
4. Get the student to really understand their swing and when it goes wrong be able to fix the fault.
All student at the David Bailey academy enjoy their golf lessons in London and the improvement this leads to because they both understand the process they are going through and are committed to this process because their goals are realistic and the changes are measurable.
